During a Behavioural Psychology course, Jolien came across the research of Robert Cialdini and she couldn't get enough of it. Cialdini studied the different ways in which people are influenced and summarised them into seven convenient principles that Jolien tucked into her marketing toolbox. They come in very handy when trying to convince consumers – or when other marketers attempt to convince her.

As a researcher, Sandersan Onie works on suicide prevention. He is affiliated with the World Health Organization, among other institutions. In his TED Talk ‘How targeted ads might just save your life’, he explains how search behaviour provides valuable insights into people’s struggles with suicidal thoughts and/or mental health problems – and what a huge difference it could make to show the right ads in the right place, pointing the way to help. “I set up and monitor campaigns for our clients every day,” Jolien says. “The TED Talk made me think about the broader social importance of digital marketing.”
