Dennis Nicholls

Our humans are avid media consumers. We’re always keen to know what they’ve read, watched and listened to over the past few weeks, because there’s bound to be good stuff there. Today it’s Dennis Nicholls’ turn to share his favourites. Get inspired by our managing director aka sunseeker.

Read: Talk Triggers – Jay Baer

In Talk Triggers, Jay Baer reveals the extent to which we all rely on recommendations when making purchasing decisions. Our managing director finds it striking that word-of-mouth is so often overlooked in our carefully planned communication strategies, despite being “one of the most powerful advertising tools available.”

Talk Triggers not only inspires those looking to spark organic conversations around their brand; it also got Dennis thinking about the need to stand out from the crowd. “The book encourages you to (re)consider how you can set yourself apart. After all, word-of-mouth is about giving people a story worth sharing. ‘Same is lame’, as Baer stresses throughout his work.”

Watch:  Influencer Marketing - Curtis Coltrane

Dennis: “This relatively ‘old’ video features New York professionals who were using influencer marketing long before it became a trend. It shows case studies from brands that employ influencers in very clever ways, offering a fresh perspective on this popular marketing approach.”

What stood out to our managing director were key insights such as “influencers are not media outlets, they are people. Build a relationship”. Dennis adds: “Celebrities often come across as inauthentic. It’s obvious that they’re being paid to promote products they don’t use. So, the idea is to focus on influencers whose personality truly resonates with your audience instead. Coltrane also wisely encourages brands to get their influencers involved, so they become genuinely excited about sharing things with their peers.”

Listen: The Marketing Book Podcast - Douglas Burdett

For years, Dennis listened to The Marketing Book Podcast, in which Burdett invites marketing and sales authors to discuss their work. “It’s a shame the podcast recently had its 500th and final episode”, Dennis says. “I learned so much from them.” The episodes that really stuck with him include number 155 (“Exactly What to Say by Phil M. Jones”) and 149 (“The Perfect Close by James Muir”), though he admits that there are just too many to list.

Dennis: “The podcast usually highlights the key takeaways from the book in question, so you always walk away feeling more informed on the topic. But still, at the end of each episode, I found myself thinking: ‘That’s fascinating! I need to get a copy ...’. It’s that impactful.”
